Generating national media attention for abusive and unconstitutional state program against immigrants

Just Futures Law - Fall 2021

Project: Working with the brilliant attorneys at Just Futures Law, we worked to generate national press attention around a key court hearing for two migrant fathers being held under Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s Lone Star program.

Objective: To bring awareness to the brutal and illegal realities of Operation Lone Star.

Components: Created a communications plan, a talking points document, a pre-hearing advisory, social media updates including promoting a live event to watch the hearing online, a post-hearing press release, post-hearing email update to supporters, conducted media outreach before and after the hearing, and coordinated key media interviews with Just Futures staff as well as for its lead grassroots partner organization.

Results: We successfully generated key media hits in national outlets: NPR’s All Things Considered, Washington Post, and NBC News.

Real world impact: The Texas court dropped charges against two migrant fathers arrested, the first-ever dismissal of charges for people arrested under the program. It was a first-of-its-kind victory against Governor Abbott’s Operation Lone Star. The legal victory followed Just Future Law's partner Grassroots Leadership’s groundbreaking work to expose the systematically racist, abusive, and unconstitutional nature of the program.
